More men are grocery shopping than ever before, according to survey data, but plenty of anecdotal evidence suggests that practice has not made perfect. If you needed proof that men are bad at grocery shopping, consider the well-documented, hilariously hopeless plight of the male Instacart shopper.

Researchers speculate that a hunter mentality informs men’s approach to grocery shopping, whereas a gathering mentality informs women’s approach. That explains why even when you send your husband to the store with a detailed list of food items at Costco, he returns with a new TV because it was a great deal. Still, other studies suggest that the gendered binary of hunting and gathering is a myth, and plenty of women were hunters.
We want to offer an alternative theory as to why men suck at grocery shopping: there is not enough butt rock at the supermarket. Typically, grocery stores hire companies like Mood Media (formerly Muzak) to provide music, which tends to be the easy-to-listen genre often played in public spaces. Slower-tempo music has been found to help people relax and spend more time shopping, and by extension, potentially spend more money.
Here’s the thing: Creed has slower songs, so there is no reason why “With Arms Wide Open” should not be blaring in the cereal aisle. Sure, their open arms may drop the grocery list their partners sent them with, but maybe they’ll feel comfortable and present enough to remember a few items that go together… instead of all chips and no dips.
Or maybe you can eat that TV.
@melissabeeler2 I didnt expect him to first of all- like it and second of all, actually go grocery shopping with this giant grocery list. 🤣🤣🤣 #couples #couplecomedy #marriedlife #husbandandwife #funny ♬ Funny – Gold-Tiger
Even Knowledge Comes in Threes
In the business world, the three types of knowledge often referred to are explicit, implicit, and tacit knowledge. But when it comes to authentic learning, Daryl Chow, a psychologist, researcher, and author of the newsletter Frontiers of Psychotherapist Development, recommends three different options.

Content Knowledge: Content knowledge is not the capacity for savvy social media posting but general knowledge of “information, instruction, and materials” about a topic. Content knowledge is important to an extent, but without other types of knowledge, it’s pretty basic. It’s like being a guy who’s good at bar trivia but otherwise a terrible hang.
Process Knowledge: As Chow explains, “content knowledge is focused on ‘learning to know,’ whereas process knowledge is focused on ‘learning to do.’” Process knowledge requires the relational ability to understand people in moment-to-moment interactions. It’s the person who’s fine at trivia, but is there because the team likes having them around.
Conditional Knowledge: You know some fun facts and how to get along with most people. Great, but do you know how to deal with that system getting shaken up? Or as Chow puts it, “Conditional knowledge is the ability to know how to approach things differently when the situation, context, and person you are relating with changes.” If you know how to deal with a lame trivia host, an inexperienced bartender, and infighting on your team, then you’re doing it right.
Quick Hit: Weed and Flow

The elusive flow state. That feeling of being equal parts present, productive, and blissful. A sense of locking in, or being in the zone. We all want it, and from nootropics to functional mushrooms, there’s a product out there promising to help you find it. But what if it just took a little weed?
As Conor B. Murphy, an advisor at The Flow Research Collective, points out, the right dose of cannabis may be an effective dam release. Specifically, Murphy suspects that anandamide, the first endocannabinoid ever discovered, could spark flow in the same way that exercise does: by boosting dopamine while reducing cognitive load.
“Many have reported that cannabis improves our ability to access flow,” Murphy writes, acknowledging that without further scientific inquiry, there is no way to know if this is true. “But the chemistry of it makes sense.”
Murphy and his colleagues have partnered with Ojai Energetics to study whether CBD can influence a flow state when combined with surfing, so more will be revealed. But if you live in a recreational state, we also encourage your experimentation.
